The home area Tourism of the Department of Geography of the Faculty of Science and Mathematics of the University of Sarajevo was determined by the Decision of the Senate of the University of Sarajevo number: 01-38-2386/10 dated 14.07.2010. of the year, on approval of the CLARIFIED TEXT of the list of main scientific areas and main subjects of the Faculty of Science and Mathematics, University of Sarajevo, within the Decision on determining the main areas and main subjects of higher education institutions of the University of Sarajevo, group of natural, mathematical and biotechnical sciences number: 0101-I -1569/08 in Sarajevo, May 14, 2008. years. Subject disciplines were additionally supplemented by the decisions of the Council of the Faculty of Science and the Senate of the University number: 01-6605/16 dated 26.10.2016 and 01-6075/17 dated 27.09.2017. years.

The concept of the establishment and development of education in the field of tourism at the Department of Geography of the Faculty of Science and Mathematics at the University of Sarajevo is primarily based on the strategic macroeconomic determination of Bosnia and Herzegovina, its entities and cantons for the economically functional and environmentally optimal valorization of existing natural and social resources in the function of intensification economic development. In connection with the above, in all general and sectoral development strategies adopted at the state, entity and cantonal levels in the period since 2000, tourism is recognized as one of the strategic economic branches of sustainable development of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Incorporation of tourism as a development economic branch was officially made visible for the first time through the creation of entity spatial plans as primary level strategic documents that define the way and forms of valorization of natural and social resources for the needs of the development of the tourism industry.
