The beginnings of scientific and research work at the Department of Geology date back to 1950 at the Faculty of Philosophy. Since 1960, this teaching-scientific chair will continue its work within the Department of Geography at the Faculty of Science and Mathematics, which becomes an independent teaching-scientific institution separated from the Faculty of Philosophy.
Geology is the science of the origin, development, structure, composition and dynamics of the Earth. Based on the subjects and topics of geological studies within the Department, scientific research work was carried out within the teaching subjects General Geology, Petrography with Mineralogy, Mineralogy with Crystallography and Paleogeography.
Geological studies include numerous activities, from research and study of the composition and structure of the Earth’s crust, through research into the occurrence and deposits of mineral raw materials, underground water, geothermal energy, to research into the geological features of the terrain for the purposes of spatial planning and the protection of natural resources and rare deposits of fossils, minerals, and rocks. and others
Significant engagement of teachers within the Department of Geology was realized by the realization of scientific research projects of detailed geological research, studies in the field of geology, reports on mineralogical-petrographic tests, as well as revision of projects and studies that have a scientific and primarily applied character.
Geological studies are used in various branches of economy and industry (mining, construction, energy, water management, agriculture, forestry, etc.), and in general the development of Bosnia and Herzegovina, from the aspect of examining the structure and composition of various rocks, minerals, studying and researching mineral raw materials, then the economic evaluation of mineral resources, up to the protection of geological heritage, the revitalization of space and solving the problem of geohazards.
